Defenders Rally to Beat the B-Mets

BINGHAMTON, NY- The never give up attitude of the first place Defenders came through yet again as Connecticut rallied to defeat Binghamton 10-6 Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium as well as claim another series 3-1.

Trailing by one in the ninth inning, the Defenders batted around and scored six unanswered runs, capped off with a CF-Mike McBryde grand slam over the left field wall.

Both teams traded solo homeruns as their first runs of the game by McBryde in the first inning and 3B-Shawn Bowman in the second inning.

Binghamton took their first lead of the game in the third inning after loading the bases on Defender's starter, RHP-Jesse Foppert and C-Josh Thole ripped a two RBI double in the left centerfield alleyway, B-mets led 3-1.

The Defenders chipped into the lead in fourth on a LF-Bobby Felmy sac fly to plate SS-Brandon Crawford who leadoff with a double.

The B-Mets inflated their lead to three runs in the fifth with another two RBI double but this time it was LF-D.J. Wabick giving Binghamton a 5-2 advantage.

Connecticut responded in the sixth with back to back homers by 1B-Brett Pill (6) and SS-Brandon Crawford (2), to trim the lead one.

In the ninth, RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve got aboard with a one out single to right then 2B-Sharlon Schoop reached on the second error by 2B-Ruben Tejada who threw the ball away allowing Martinez-Esteve to advance to third. C-Jackson Williams delivered an RBI single up the middle tying the game at five followed by a pinch hit walk to Brock Bond to load the bases. 3B-Brad Boyer got hit by a pitch to drive in the go ahead run but Connecticut wasn't satisfied with just a one run lead as McBryde crushed his second homerun of the game finishing with five RBI on the afternoon.

Defender's reliever, RHP-Dan Griffin (4-4) picked up his second win of the series tossing two scoreless innings of one hit ball and struck out one. B-Mets closer, LHP-Roydrick Merritt (2-4) blew his fourth save and suffered his fourth loss of the season allowing six unearned runs off of three hits, walked one, hit one, and struck out one in just one inning of work. B-Mets starter, RHP-Tobi Stoner was over shadowed by the late inning heroics as he tossed a season high eight solid innings, allowed four earned runs off of six hits and fanned six in the no decision.
