Altoona Curve News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Altoona Curve were able to overcome a 2-0 hole early and pound out 10 unanswered runs and cruise to an easy 10-4 win over the Binghamton Mets on Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium.
Curve hurler Rudy Owens was able to corral his 10th win of the season - his first since August 4 - with a 5.0 inning performance where allowed just a pair of runs on six hits. The southpaw struck out six and walked none.
Offensively, the Curve (73-52) came back with a run in the fourth to cut the deficit in half at 2-1, which set the stage for two big offensive outbursts in the fifth and sixth.
Matt Hague, who finished the night 2-for-4 with four RBI, drove in three runs with a three-run double in the fifth to give Altoona a lead they would not relinquish at 4-2. The Curve would tack on a total of four in the fifth and five in the sixth to take a commanding 10-2 lead. Hague's second RBI double came in the sixth.
Jim Negrych (1-for-3) doubled home a pair of runs in the sixth and scored two runs on the night while Miles Durham (2-for-4, 2 RBI) enjoyed a solid night with an RBI single and a solo homer - his ninth of the year.
Right-hander Michael Colla came on for Altoona after Owens departed from the mound and tossed four innings allowing just a pair of solo homers to earn his first Double-A save.
All told, Altoona had nine extra-base hits - with eight of those hits being doubles - which ties a season high (6/27 vs. Bowie). The eight doubles also ties a season high (also accomplished on 6/27 vs. Bowie).
The Curve are 21 games over .500 for the first time since July 16 after winning 3-0 at Harrisburg running their record to 56-35.
The Altoona Curve will look for the series sweep of the B-Mets (60-64) and also look to finish their six-game road trip 5-1 on Sunday night at 6:35 p.m. LHP Tony Watson (4-2, 2.92) takes the hill for the Altoona Curve while Binghamton's starter has yet to be announced as the scheduled starter, righty Josh Stinson, was promoted to Triple-A Buffalo during Saturday's game.
