BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - An early three-run lead was not enough on Friday night as the Binghamton Mets scored the final four runs of the ballgame to swipe the series opener from the Curve, 4-3. Brandon Cumpton (7-5) suffered the loss for Altoona after getting off to a hot start in the game, facing one over the minimum through four.

Altoona actually opened the scoring in the contest, something they didn't do in the series with Trenton. Quincy Latimore was struck by a Gonzalez Germen (3-4) pitch to start the second and moved to second when an errant throw was made by B-Mets' first baseman Eric Campbell on the force attempt of Latimore at second on a ground ball off the bat of Stefan Welch. With two on, Drew Maggi doubled down the left field line in his first Double-A at bat and brought Latimore home for the game's first run.

Things continued to go the Curve's way in the third when Ramon Cabrera brought home Jarek Cunningham with an RBI double of his own to run the lead to 2-0. Altoona's biggest lead came at 3-0 as it was once again Cabrera coming through with the hit, this time an RBI single to score Brock Holt in the fifth.

Cumpton allowed the first of his four runs in the fifth when Rylan Sandoval brought in Dustin Martin for the B-Mets first run. He rebounded to retire each of the next three hitters but things did not go so easily once he reached the sixth.

Juan Lagares flew out to start the inning but then three straight singles loaded the bases against the Curve starter. Looking for a groundball to induce a double play, Cumpton instead got a ball off the bat of Martin that deflected off his out-stretched glove and out into right field away from the second baseman Cunningham. It allowed two runners to score and ended Cumpton's night. Kris Harvey was called into the game to hold the line but Sandoval came through with the single to left that brought home Campbell from third for the game's decisive run.

The Curve had a chance to tie the game in the eighth off reliever Armando Rodriguez as he issued back-to-back walks of Cabrera and Latimore to start the inning. He settled down and retired the next three Curve hitters to end the inning and the threat.

Looking to even the series, the Curve (29-36) will send RHP Shairon Martis (4-2, 3.67) to the hill in the second game of the series with Binghamton at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday night. The B-Mets (31-32) will oppose with LHP Darin Gorski (4-3, 3.97) who is making his 11th start of the season.

Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. The Curve return home to Peoples Natural Gas Field beginning Tuesday night to start a homestand featuring the Cowboy Monkeys, The ZOOperstars, the Double-A debut of Gerrit Cole, fireworks, giveaways and more.
