Curse of the Frontenacs Strikes Again
February 21, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release
The Kingston Frontenacs once again managed to beat the top ranked team in the CHL, despite an amazing almost comeback by the Generals. Oshawa has had a tough time against Kingston through the whole season, unable to find their groove against the seventh place team in the East. Despite the 5-4 loss, tonight's game supported a great cause as it was our third annual Pucks 4 Heart game in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
The Generals were plagued with penalties throughout the first period, giving the Frontenacs great scoring opportunities. However, the first Frontenacs goal was scored with both teams at even strength at 9:01 in the first period. It was the only goal of the period despite the Generals outshooting the Frontenacs 15-10. At the end of the period, Josh Brown was called for double minors of butt ending and would sit for four minutes at the beginning of the second.
The Generals started the period at a great disadvantage with Brown in the penalty box and Mermis also sitting from a slashing call at 19:15 in the first. The Frontenacs took advantage and at 2:16 put a power play goal past Ken Appleby, giving them an early two-goal advantage over the Generals. Less than two minutes later, Sam Field put a third Fronts goal past Ken Appleby, assisted by Verbeek. It was at this time that Jeremy Brodeur took over for Appleby in goal. After a quick goalie change, the Frontenacs scored again, this time at 6:22 when Lawson Crouse found the back of the net. With the Frontenacs at a 4-0 advantage over the Generals, it was time for a Generals goal. Less than a minute after the fourth Frontenacs goal, Mitchell Vande Sompel scored a much needed goal putting the Generals on the board. Fans were elated and the GM Centre lit up when Vande Sompel scored. A few minutes later, Cole Cassels was sent to the penalty box for unsportsmanlike conduct. With the Frontenacs again on a power play, Evan McEneny scored the fifth and final goal for Kingston. With less than five minutes remaining in the second frame, Dakota Mermis and Cody Caron gave the fans what they wanted and dropped the gloves for a fight. Both players were given five minute penalties for fighting and Caron received an additional two minutes for roughing. It was a tough period for the Generals, who were outshot 12-4 and were well aware that a shift needed to take place in the third period.
You could see a clear jump in the Generals pace entering the third period as the team was eager to catch up to the Frontenacs. Anthony Cirelli had an outstanding period and his effort was visible during every shift. At 5:39, he scored an unassisted goal narrowing the Frontenacs lead to 5-2 and giving the Generals a push they needed. Only minutes later, Anthony Cirelli found the back of the net a second time, this time assisted by Dakota Mermis and Matt Mistele. The Generals were hungry for a comeback and were fighting hard to get one. They got even closer to evening the score at 17:37 when Brent Pedersen scored the fourth Generals goal of the game, assisted by Mitchell Vande Sompel and Anthony Cirelli. With the Frontenacs lead narrowed to only one goal, the Generals pulled goaltender Jeremy Brodeur in order to have a man advantage. Unfortunately, the Generals couldn't win the battle tonight and the Frontenacs took the win 5-4. It is certainly not for a lack of effort that the Generals lost tonight, but the goaltending of Lucas Peressini certainly assisted the Frontenacs in securing the win tonight. Cirelli was awarded second star of the game after having a three-point night and helping to keep the Generals in the game.
Thank you to everyone who came out to support our third annual Pucks 4 Heart game, your generosity and kindness have helped the Heart & Stroke Foundation create survivors. Our next home game is tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. when the Generals take on the Ottawa 67's. It is our TImbits Jamboree and it sure to be a lot of fun for the whole family!
Shots on goal: Generals (35) Frontenacs (31)
Molson Canadian Three Stars: McEneny (1) Cirelli (2) Schutt (3)
