State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE - Matt Curry went 2-for-3 with a double and reached base three times for the State College Spikes, but it wasn't enough as the Spikes were held to three hits total by the Tri-City ValleyCats pitching staff in a 7-0 defeat at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Monday night.
Curry's base hits were the first two of the game for State College (25-26), and the first baseman added a walk in the ninth. It was the ninth time in the 2010 season that Curry compiled multiple hits in one game, and his fourth-inning double gave him the team lead in that category with 12.
Mel Rojas, Jr. picked up the other Spikes hit in the ninth inning, singling to center to start a State College rally that loaded the bases with two outs. The Spikes could not dent the run column, however, leaving three runners on to end the game.
Tri-City (23-27) took the lead in the early going with three runs off of State College starter Tyler Waldron (2-5) in the second and third innings. Waldron allowed three hits, two walks and two hit batsmen while striking out one and drawing the eventual loss. The ValleyCats added a run each in the fifth and seventh innings before a final pair of runs in the ninth.
Spikes reliever Brooks Pounders struck out five in three innings of work after coming on for Waldron. The Spikes finished their six-game homestand with a 3-3 mark.
Andrew Robinson (1-1) earned the victory for Tri-City with five innings of two-hit ball, walking one and striking out six.
ValleyCats second baseman Enrique Hernandez went 3-for-5 with his first home run of the year; a solo shot to center in the fifth inning, and finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
After the game, the Spikes took off for Massachusetts to start a three-game series with the Lowell Spinners at LeLacheur Park on Tuesday. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will feature State College lefty Zack Von Rosenberg (1-5), whose six shutout innings on Thursday helped to lead a Spikes victory over Staten Island, against Lowell right-hander Tyler Wilson (1-3).
Fans can catch all of the action on the Spikes Radio Network and flagship station 95.3 FM 3WZ starting at 6:50 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from LeLacheur Park.
The Spikes' radio broadcast can also be heard worldwide through the "Listen Live" link on StateCollegeSpikes.com, provided by 95.3 FM 3WZ.
