FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Parkview Field hosted its seventh sell-out crowd of the season on Thursday night, but the TinCaps lost to the South Bend Cubs, 3-1. Fort Wayne put the tying runners into scoring position in the bottom of the ninth inning in front of 7,557 fans, however, couldn't get over the hump.

The 'Caps have proven to be a team that plays its hardest until the final out, yet has a tendency to come up short. The Summit City club is now 11 games below .500 in contests decided by one or two runs.

First baseman Cole Cummings led off the second inning with a home run pulled over the right-field wall to give the TinCaps (14-18, 41-57) an early lead. But the Cubs (22-10, 56-42), who lead the Midwest League West Division's second-half standings, responded with a pair of runs in the third and an insurance score in the sixth.

Next Game: Friday, Aug. 5 vs. South Bend (7:05 p.m.)

- TinCaps Probable Starter: RHP Ryan Bergert (No. 27 Padres prospect)

- Cubs Probable Starter: RHP Luis Devers
