Severino Promoted to Wichita, Kernels Add Garry Jr. and Perez

Cedar Rapids, IA - Cedar Rapids Kernels second baseman Yunior Severino has been promoted to the Wichita Wind Surge. In a pair of corresponding moves, the Kernels have reinstated outfielder Willie Joe Garry Jr. and received infielder Mikey Perez from AAA St. Paul. With today's transactions, the Kernels active roster stands at 28 players.

Severino has played in 46 games with Cedar Rapids in 2022, slashing .283/.398/.572 for a .970 OPS with 30 runs scored, nine doubles, two triples, 11 home runs and 40 RBI. Dating back to July 17, the 22-year-old leads the Midwest League in home runs (7), RBI (21), OPS (1.581), slugging (1.071), extra-base hits (12) and total bases (45); ranks third in on-base percentage (.510) and hits (18) while landing fourth in batting average (.429). Originally signed by Minnesota on December 8, 2017, Severino missed 43 games at the start of the 2022 season before returning on June 1.

Garry Jr. has missed 55 games on the injured list while recovering from a broken right hand. Across 32 games with the Kernels this season, he has slashed .186/.319/.371 for a .690 OPS while scoring 17 runs, collecting 12 extra-base hits and stealing six bags. The Pascagoula, Mississippi native was selected by the Twins in the ninth round of the 2018 MLB Amateur Draft.

Perez will be making his High-A debut with Cedar Rapids after spending most of the 2022 campaign with Class A Fort Myers. The 2021 15th-rounder out of UCLA slashed .225/.329/.403 for a .732 OPS while adding 43 runs scored, 20 doubles, a triple, eight home runs and 37 RBI across 81 games with the Mighty Mussels. He went 32-for-37 on the basepaths in the Florida State League, nabbing bags at an 86.5% success rate. Perez was promoted to the St. Paul Saints on August 2, blasting a go-ahead pinch-hit three-run homer in his lone at-bat with the AAA affiliate.
