Cumana's two-run double pushes Lehigh Valley back atop IL North standings

May 23, 2019 - International League (IL) - Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs completed a sweep of the Syracuse Mets and regained first-place in the IL North with a 6-5 walk-off victory Thursday night at Coca-Cola Park.

Grenny Cumana hit a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth as the Pigs (24-19) rallied from four runs behind in the last three innings.

Five of Lehigh Valley's six batters reached base safely in the ninth against Mets reliever Arquimedes Caminero (0-1). Lane Adams and Deivy Grullon each singled before Mitch Walding went down on strikes. Ali Castillo then reached on an error to load the bases.

Matt McBride followed with an RBI single to set the stage for Cumana, whose double brought pinch-runner Andrew Romine and Castillo home.

Malquin Canelo started the comeback when he led off the seventh with a triple before scoring on a Nick Williams groundout to cut the deficit to 5-2. Canelo tripled again in the eighth, this time scoring Gift Ngoepe to make it a two-run game.

Kyle Dohy (1-1) earned his first Triple-A victory after tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

The Mets (24-21) got on the board first when Rene Rivera's first-inning single brought Ruben Tejada home to give the visitors a 1-0 lead against spot-starter Alexis Rivero. Walding drew Lehigh Valley level when he drew a bases-loaded walk against Mets starter Chris Flexen in the bottom of the third.

Rivera was at it again in the fifth when his RBI single plated both Braxton Lee and Tejada. Five pitches later, Dilson Herrera hit his eighth home run of the season to extend the Mets lead to 5-1.

Over the next four innings, the combination of Tom Windle, Josh Martin and Dohy combined to allow just one hit. Martin struck out five of the eight batters he faced during his two innings.

Six Pigs recorded multiple hits including Williams, who went 2-for-5 with an RBI in his first Triple-A contest since June 29, 2017.

Rivera led the Mets' attack going 2-for-5 with 3 RBI.

With the victory, Lehigh Valley climbs back atop the IL North standings - one-half game ahead of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders and a full game up on the Mets.

The IronPigs' homestand continues Friday as the Pigs open a four-game series against the visiting Buffalo Bisons. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Stick around after the game for Friday Night Fireworks presented by the United Way.
