Daytona Tortugas News Release

DAYTONA - With a third inning offensive explosion, the Daytona Cubs (69-59, 35-23) cruised to an 8-2 victory to open their series with the Clearwater Threshers (62-66, 25-33). The first eight men reached base and scored for the Cubs in the 3rd, capped off by a Kyler Burke grand slam. Starter Brooks Raley would use the support to cruise through six innings, earning his team leading seventh victory of 2010.

Clearwater starter Heitor Correa faced the minimum through the first two frames, but saw the wheels fall off in the third inning. Cubs first baseman Jake Opitz led off the frame with a walk and moved up to second base on a passed ball. Left fielder Greg Rohan brought Opitz around with a ground-rule double to center field. Center fielder Evan Crawford put runners at first and third with a single through the left side of the infield. Shortstop Junior Lake followed with a single of his own and brought home Rohan. Daytona then took advantage of a Carlos Perdomo error on a bunt-single from DJ LeMahieu. Two runs came in on the errant throw, making it a 4-0 ballgame. Daytona tacked on four more with one swing of the bat as Kyler Burke smashed his second grand slam of the season over the right field wall, giving the Cubs an 8-0 advantage.

That was all the run support Cubs starter Brooks Raley (7-6) needed. The lefty surrendered four hits through the first three innings, but no runs came across as he got help from his defense. The Cubs used a double play to end the second inning and catcher Michael Brenly cut down a baserunner at third base to quell a threat in the third inning. Raley would complete six innings, allowing only one unearned run. Cubs reliever Oswaldo Martinez pitched the final three frames to earn his fifth save of the season.

Heitor Correa (7-13) took the loss for Clearwater, surrendering 8 runs in 2+ innings. Clearwater put single tallies on the board in the 6th and 7th innings by way of a Cubs error and a Carlos Perdomo RBI groundout, but would not mount a threat to Daytona.

The victory moves Daytona just 2.5 games out of first place in the North division as the 2010 schedule winds down. The North leading Yankees were idle for the second night in a row due to rain. With 11 games to play, the Cubs have now won back-to-back ballgames, putting pressure on Tampa.

The second game of the series will get underway at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday night. It will be the final "$1 Wednesdays" at the ballpark, with soft drinks, popcorn, hot dogs, and ice cream costing just 100 pennies. It also will be College Night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
