DAYTONA, Fla. (July 26, 2014) - After two rainouts, the long awaited series between the St. Lucie Mets and Daytona Cubs got underway on Saturday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Both games were decidedly won by the home team, as the Cubs beat the Mets 6-3 in game 1 and cruised to a 9-1 victory in game 2.

In game one, the first four batters for the Cubs singled off of Kevin McGowan. Kyle Schwarber's hit scored Jacob Hannemann to tie the game 1-1, and Dan Vogelbach followed with a two-run single to put the Cubs up 3-1.

Daytona scored three more runs in the fourth. Hannemann collected another hit with an RBI single. Eudy Pina dropped Marco Hernandez's fly ball to right to let in another run. Finally, Julian Hilario walked in a run with the bases loaded to give the Cubs a commanding 6-1 lead.

Cam Maron delivered a two-run single for the Mets in the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-3. However, Felix Pena and Stephan Perakslis retired everyone in order after Maron to end the ball game.

Pena got the win. He limited the Mets to three runs, two earned, on six hits in five innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Perakslis retired all six batters he faced to earn his third save.

McGowan took the loss for the Mets. He gave up eight hits and six runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Hannemann went 3 for 4 for Daytona. Hernandez picked up two hits.

Jeff McNeil went 2 for 3 with two runs scored for the Mets. L.J. Mazzilli hit a pair of doubles, scored a run and drove in a run.

In game 2, the Cubs jumped on the Mets early with seven runs on seven hits in the second inning. Billy McKinney started the scoring with an RBI single. Chadd Krist drew a bases loaded walk and Jordan Hankins drove in a run on a ground out.

All that damage was done against Matt Koch. After a brief rain delay, play resumed and Tim Peterson took over on the mound. He was greeted by a two-run triple off the bat of Hernandez to make it 5-0. Schwarber singled in a run to make it 6-0 and he later scored on a pass ball to make it 7-0.

The Cubs added two more runs in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead.

That was plenty for Cubs starter Tayler Scott, who made one of his best starts of the season. He shut out the Mets over five innings and struck out a season-high eight batters. He did not issue a walk and allowed just five singles.

The Mets avoided the shutout when Albert Cordero singled home Mazzilli sixth. The hit came off of Tyler Bremmer.

Koch suffered the loss. He gave up five hits and five runs in 1 2/3 innings.

Hannemann went 3 for 4 from the leadoff spot for the second straight game for Daytona. Vogelbach went 3 for 4.

Saturday was the first time this season the Mets were swept in a doubleheader. They have now lost a season-high six straight games and fell to 1-7 on their current 10-game road trip.

The Mets (57-44, 17-15) and Cubs (47-54, 21-12) meet in another doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 5:05 p.m. Those two games will complete the 10-game road trip.
