Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

JUPITER, FL - Clearwater beat Jupiter 7-6 on Sunday afternoon but the result came with some controversy.

With the bases loaded and the game tied at six in the top of ninth, Brian Pointer hit a fly ball to center. Roman Quinn tagged up and scored on the play but it appeared as if he might have left the base early.

The Hammerheads appealed the play but the call stood much to the dismay of Jupiter manager Brian Schneider who was thrown out of the game by home plate umpire Charlie Ramos after a heated argument.

Jupiter would get out of the jam without allowing any more runs but the team could not score in the ninth as the tag up call ended up being the difference in the game.

The game was a back and forth affair all afternoon. In the first, Justin Bohn led off with a single and later scored on a ground out by Matt Juengel.

In the fourth inning the Threshers would take their first lead of the game when Pointer hit a two-run homer to right.

The lead didn't last long as the Hammerheads did some damage with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Noah Perio started things by reaching on a single and following a walk by Sharif Othman, Ryan Goetz pulled a single into right to tie things at two.

After Justin Bohn walked, Colin Moran hit a grounder to second that went off the glove of the second baseman. Two runs scored on the error as the Hammerheads reclaimed the lead.

The score would remain 4-2 until the sixth when some Jupiter miscues ended up costing the home team. With one out Art Charles reached on a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pointer would then hit a grounder to first but the ball went under the glove of Viosergy Rosa as Charles scored.

Pointer would then steal second base and when the throw by the catcher sailed into center field, he advanced to third. After a strikeout Everett Williams walked to put runners on the corners.

Corey Bass would drive both men home when he hit a double into the gap in right-center to put Clearwater up 5-4.

After the Threshers picked up a run in the top of the eighth, Jupiter would tie the game in the bottom of the frame. The Hammerheads loaded the bases with no outs when Othman hit a sac fly to center to make it a one run game.

Goetz would then hit a grounder to second that looked like an easy double play but the second baseman bobbled the ball allowing Goetz to reach at first.

The Hammerheads would take advantage of the miscue as Bohn hit a single by the shortstop to tie the game at six. Jupiter would load the bases but Juengel flew out to end the threat.

In the top of the ninth a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases to set up the sac fly for Pointer.

With the loss the Hammerheads split the series with the Threshers but did win the season-series 6-2. Jupiter will hit the road on Monday for a four-game series with Brevard County. The team will return home on Friday to begin a four-game series with the Tampa Yankees.
