Yankees Bounce Miracle, 6-4, in Series Finale

TAMPA, Fla. (July 27, 2014) - The Tampa Yankees knocked off the Fort Myers Miracle, 6-4, at Steinbrenner Field on Sunday afternoon to take the series, three games to one.

Dante Bichette, Jr. provided an early two-run lead for the Yankees. Danny Oh led off the first inning with an opposite field single to left. After Miracle starter Ethan Mildren struck out Aaron Judge, Eric Jagielo lofted a base hit into right to put Yankee baserunners on the corners. Bichette then hit a liner into the gap in right center to score Oh and Judge, 2-0.

Mike Gonzales answered for the Miracle in the top of the second. On a 1-2 pitch from Tampa starter Conner Kendrick, Gonzales deposited a deep fly ball into the seats beyond the right field fence. The homer for Gonzales was his eighth of the season, second in as many days and extended his hitting streak to a team-best 18 games.

Tampa rallied in the bottom of the second to regain a two-run advantage with three consecutive singles. Angelo Gumbs poked a base hit to right, then Trent Garrison followed with a single into left. On an 0-2 pitch, Anderson Feliz served a liner to left to score a run and put Tampa on top 3-1.

Fort Myers drew even in the third. With two outs, Travis Harrison extended the inning with a base hit. Then, Dalton Hicks walloped a two-run homer off Kendrick. On a 1-2 pitch, Hicks hammered his ninth home run of the season to tie the game, 3-3.

The Miracle jumped ahead briefly in the fourth. Gonzales reached on a lead-off walk. After Stuart Turner struck out, Rafael Valera doubled into center to put runners at second and third. Byron Buxton then yanked a base hit through the left side of a drawn-in infield to give Fort Myers a 4-3 lead.

Tampa grabbed hold of the game for good in the bottom of the fourth. After Feliz struck out, Custodio doubled down the third base line off Mildren. Oh plated Custodio on a single down the left field line. Judge then picked up a base hit to right center to put runners on a corners. A Mildren walk to Jagielo loaded the bases. Bichette, Jr. struck out, but Jose Rosario delivered a two-out, two-run base hit into center to score two runs and give the Yankees a 6-4 lead.

Kendrick (4-7) picked up the win with five innings and yielding four runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Cesar Vargas retired the final batter of the game for his sixth save.

Mildren (1-1) went four innings in a losing effort for the Miracle and gave up six runs on eleven hits. He walked two and punched out four. B.J. Hermsen pitched three scoreless frames and Madison Boer tossed a clean eighth inning.

The Miracle (64-40, 23-12) return to Hammond Stadium for the final home series before moving to JetBlue Park for August.
