Iowa Cubs News Release

Des Moines, IA (August 3, 2008) - Mitch Atkins earned his fifth straight Triple-A win and his 10th straight start overall as the Iowa Cubs (68-47) beat the Salt Lake Bees (68-47) 7-3 at Principal Park this afternoon. Pitching in front of 7,651 fans and with a 105-degree heat index on the field, Atkins struck out a season-high 11 in six innings and retired the final 16 batters that he faced.

The Bees got their only run off Atkins in the top of the first inning. Jordan Czarniecki reached on an infield single and went to third on a double by Sean Rodriguez. Atkins got some help from his defense when Dee Brown followed with a pop-up down the right field line. Bobby Scales went out from second base to make the catch while Czarniecki tagged up and broke for the plate after the catch. Scales made a perfect throw to the plate and Tony Richie hung on to the ball as Czarniecki came barreling into him to complete the double play. Kendry Morales followed with a ball down the first base line for a double to drive in Rodriguez. I-Cubs' Manager Pat Listach felt the ball was foul and was ejected from the game while arguing the call with first base umpire Jake Uhlenhopp. Atkins (5-0) struck out Brandon Wood to end the inning and didn't allow another baserunner through six innings of work.

The I-Cubs got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Scales led off with a triple and scored on a ground out by Micah Hoffpauir to even the score. Jason Dubois followed with a solo home run to center field and the Cubs led 2-1. It was Dubois' 20th home run of the season. The Cubs added to the lead off Bees' starter Dustin Moseley in the fifth. Luis Figueroa led off with a single and scored on a double by Richie. After a sacrifice bunt, Scales drew a walk and Hoffpauir cleared the bases with a three-run homer to deep right-center for a 6-1 lead. Moseley (6-7) came out after six innings and the I-Cubs added their final run off Kasey Olenburger in the seventh when Scales was hit by a pitch and scored on Hoffpauir's 26th double of the season.

Justin Berg allowed one hit in two scoreless innings in relief. The Bees added their final two runs off Michael Wuertz in the top of the ninth on solo home runs by Gary Patchett and Rodriguez.

The Cubs and Bees are tied for the best record in the Pacific Coast League and continue this series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Principal Park. RH Mike Burns (7-8, 4.09) will start for the Cubs against RH Shane Loux (12-6, 3.98) for the Bees. The gates open at 5:30 for Dog Days and a dollar hot dog night at Principal Park. The game will be broadcast live on 1460 KXNO with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
