Tucson Sidewinders News Release
New Orleans, LA - John Rodriguez delivered a pinch hit RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the New Orleans Zephyrs an 8-7 walkoff win over the Sidewinders on Saturday night. New Orleans won three of the four games in the series.
The Sidewinders took a 7-6 lead in the top of the 10th on Frank Curreri's RBI single but Dustin Glant could not hold the lead in the bottom of the inning. Glant (2-3) allowed a leadoff double to Chris Aguila and walked Valentino Pascucci before Michel Abreu lined a one out single to right to tie the game. Anderson Hernandez popped up for the second out of the inning but Rodriguez lined a single to right-center allowing Pascucci to score the winning run.
Micah Owings, making his first start for the Sidewinders since being sent down by the Diamondbacks, pitched well over six innings. Owings allowed three runs on four hits and struck out six. All three runs came on homers by Pascucci who drilled a two run shot in the third and a solo blast in the sixth off Owings. He later added another two run home run off Connor Robertson in the eighth.
Pascucci finished his night 3 for 4 with three home runs, five RBI and four runs scored.
The Sidewinders grabbed an early lead with five runs in the second inning off Zephyrs starter Nelson Figueroa who threw a wild pitch to allow the first run to score. With two outs, Figueroa walked Phil Avlas and hit Owings with a pitch to load the bases for Jeff Salazar who lined a grand slam over the wall in right to give Tucson a 5-0 lead.
Down 6-3 entering the eighth, New Orleans tied the game against the Sidewinders bullpen. Aguila drew a leadoff walk from Connor Robertson in front of Pascucci's third home run of the night and Abreu reached on a one out infield single. Reid Mahon was summoned from the bullpen and immediately allowed a triple to Anderson Hernandez which allowed the Zephyrs to tie the game.
Mahon has blown two of his last three save opportunities after beginning the season 21 for 21 between Mobile and Tucson.
Josh Whitesell had a RBI single and four walks for the Sidewinders. Jesus Merchan went 3 for 5.
The Sidewinders travel to Oklahoma City on Sunday to open a four game series with the Oklahoma Redhawks. Left-hander Evan MacLane (5-6, 4.86) starts for Tucson. First pitch is at 5:05 Tucson time. The game will air LIVE on COOL 1450 beginning at 4:55.
