Oklahoma City Comets News Release

The Oklahoma RedHawks fell 8-1 to the Tucson Sidewinders Sunday evening at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. The Sidewinders tallied seven runs on six hits and two walks in the seventh inning to decide the contest.

Tucson took a 1-0 lead off Brian Gordon in the first inning when Oklahoma City native Jeff Salazar scored on a single by Josh Whitesell. Oklahoma tied the game at one in the fourth inning. Nate Gold reached on a leadoff double and moved to third on a single by Chris Shelton. Gold scored as Ryan Roberts grounded into a double play, the second of four the RedHawks would hit into during the game.

Gordon pitched six strong innings and got the first two outs in the seventh before walking two in a row in the seventh. Tim Raines Jr., Whitesell, and Jesus Merchan had three straight hits off Gordon to end his outing. Kea Kometani took over for Oklahoma, but Tucson continued the rally. The Sidewinders had three straight base hits off Kometani as well and sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, scoring seven times to break the game open. The two runs charged to Kometani snapped a 17-inning scoreless stretch by the RedHawks bullpen.

Gordon (3-3) took the loss, while Evan MacLane earned the win for Tucson after allowing one run on six hits over seven full. Shelton and John Mayberry paced Oklahoma with two hits apiece as the RedHawks dropped to 8-11 on Sundays this season. Whitesell had four hits to lead the Sidewinders, while Jesus Merchan had three hits. Whitesell and Merchan drove in two runs each as Tucson snapped a two-game losing streak.

Oklahoma dropped to 1-4 on this homestand and saw its division lead drop to eight games over New Orleans. The RedHawks and Sidewinders will meet at 12:05 pm Monday at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
