New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Claudio Vargas struck out a season-high eight batters, and the New Orleans Zephyrs won for the fourth time in five games by beating the Las Vegas 51s on Sunday night, 1-0. The right-hander rebounded from a difficult outing in Salt Lake where he gave up six runs on nine hits in five innings, limiting Las Vegas to just two hits over 6.1 scoreless frames. He left the game with two strikes on the second batter of the seventh inning for precautionary purposes.

Vargas (5-2) had previously had seven strikeouts in a game twice this season, in consecutive starts July 4 and 9.

The Zephyrs gave Vargas the only run he would need in the fifth inning, when Jesus Felciano singled and moved to third on an Andy Green single. Chris Aguila then hit a soft grounder back to pitcher Miguel Pinango, but the 51s could not turn in the double play, allowing Feliciano to score.

Tim McNab pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, and Nate Field got a key double play to work around two walks and a base hit in the ninth to convert his ninth save.

Pinango (4-8) surrendered the one run on seven hits in six innings to take the loss.

The Zephyrs and 51s meet Monday in the second game of the series, as LHP Jonathan Niese makes his second start for the Zephyrs, faving Las Vegas RHP Heath Totten. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
