Cubs split with Sounds

Felix Pie drove in a season-high four RBI to help the Iowa Cubs defeat the Nashville Sounds 8-4, in the second game of a doubleheader at Principal Park Monday.

Pie finished the afternoon cap with three hits, including a first inning double, to drive in Andres Torres to tie the game 1-1. Pie would score two batters to give Iowa a 2-1 lead.

That lead lasted until the third when the Sounds broke out for two runs, including an RBI single by Tony Gwynn to take a 3-2 lead.

Pie struck again in the sixth when he homered to right field to tie the game at three. The I-Cubs took the lead for good when Luis Figueroa reached on a fielder's choice. Jason Dubois and Casey McGehee came around to score and give Iowa a 5-3 lead. Iowa would bat around in the inning, scoring six runs, on four hits, two that came from Pie.

Iowa reliever Jim Brower picked up the win (2-0) and put the finishing touches on four shutout innings by I-Cub relievers.

Stetter (0-3) took the loss, lasting just 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on one hit while walking one. The win capped off an afternoon that began with Iowa dropping the opener of the doubleheader, 3-1.

Iowa starter Randy Wells took the loss (6-2), allowing three runs on six hits while striking out two.

Nashville jumped on the Iowa right-hander in the third inning for three runs. Algona, Iowa native Brad Nelson drove in a pair of runs with a one out single to give the Sounds a 3-0 lead.

The I-Cubs lone run came in the fifth inning, when Pie drove in Figueroa with a sacrifice fly.

Nashville starter Lindsay Gulin (3-4) picked up the win with six strong innings, allowing one run on three hits.
