Sky Sox Homer in 11th Defeats Sidewinders 12-9

Tucson, AZ - A ninth inning rally and extra inning homer give the Sky Sox a 12-9 win over the Sidewinders on Sunday night.

The Sky Sox tied the game in the ninth with a four run inning, because of a pair of two run singles by Cory Sullivan and Seth Smith. Colorado Springs took the lead in the eleventh and ultimately won the game from a Smith three run homer off of Tucson reliever Brandon Medders.

Tucson captured the early lead in the first inning when Emilio Bonifacio led off with a single and Tim Raines, Jr. brought him home on a triple to right. Next batter, Jamie D'Antona hit a double scoring Raines to give the Sidewinders a 2-0 lead.

A Jayson Nix three run homer in the third inning gave the Sky Sox a 3-2 lead, but was later recaptured by Tucson with a two run, sixth inning. Wilkin Castillo hit a ground ball double down the right field line, which scored the two runs.

The Sidewinders extended their lead in the seventh by putting up five runs. An RBI single by Jesus Merchan and two RBI doubles by Jamie D'Antona and Wilkin Castillo pushed the lead to 9-3 after 7 innings.

The Sky Sox added two runs in the eighth form a Nix RBI double and a Seth Smith sac fly.

Max Scherzer made a relief appearance for the Sidewinders after being optioned down by the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Scherzer went two and an third innings allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits and striking out five batters.

The Sidewinders will face Colorado Springs in the last game of the series starting at 7:00 PM on Monday night. RHP Esmerling Vasquez (1-2, 6.98) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right-hander Josh Towers (4-5, 6.69) will start for the Sky Sox. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50 p.m.
