Iowa Cubs News Release
The Iowa Cubs and Omaha Royals split a double-header Saturday at Principal Park before a season-high crowd of 11,984. Iowa starter Mitch Atkins buoyed the Cubs in a 6-2 victory in game one, throwing six solid innings. Bruce Chen helped Omaha respond in the nightcap, spinning a two-hit shutout in the Royals' 2-0 win.
Atkins (4-7) allowed just four hits and two walks in six innings of work. He struck out five Omaha hitters to bring his season strikeout total to 65, just one short of Round Rock's Bud Norris, who leads the PCL with 66. Sam Fuld led the Cubs at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. He has now recorded multi-hit games in six of his last eight contests. The streak of hot hitting has helped Fuld raise his season average from .244 to .270. Bobby Scales was 1-for-2 with an RBI, a walk, and a run scored in his return to the Iowa lineup. Scales was optioned to Iowa from Chicago earlier Saturday after hitting .241 in 25 games with Chicago. Blake Parker pitched a scoreless seventh inning in the opener, lowering his ERA to 0.69. Parker has allowed just one earned run in 13 innings since being promoted to Iowa from Double-A Tennessee on May 11. The Cubs could not solve Chen in the nightcap, managing just two hits. Chen threw just 87 pitches in a seven-inning shutout and struck out four. He walked just one.
Veteran designated hitter Brian Buchanan was in the middle of the scoring for the Royals in game two, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI. His first inning RBI single plated the only run Omaha would need behind Chen. Buchanan also singled in the sixth, leading to Omaha's second run.
Iowa and Omaha meet tomorrow afternoon in the finale of their four-game series. J.R. Mathes (7-4, 2.95) will start for Iowa while left-hander Dusty Hughes (0-1, 4.18) takes the ball for Omaha. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
