Jeff Samardzija threw six solid innings as the Iowa Cubs cruised past the Round Rock Express, 5-3, Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park.

Iowa took a 2-1 lead in the second inning when Nate Spears hit a run-scoring double to score Steve Clevenger, who reached after being hit by a pitch. Spears stole third and came around to score on Anderson Machado's squeeze bunt.

The Cubs scored a run in the following three innings to take a 5-2 lead despite recording three errors in the game. Two of Round Rock's three runs were unearned. The Express' Chad Span reached on an Iowa error in the fifth inning. After a sacrifice bunt, he advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Yordany Ramirez's single for Round Rock's second run of the game.

Luis Rivas was 2-for-4 with a double and run scored while Spears was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Rivas led off the third inning with his fifth double of the year and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-1 Iowa lead.

Samardzija hit his first career triple in the fourth inning and drove in Machado to put the Cubs ahead 4-1. Round Rock walked four Iowa batters while Iowa's pitching staff did not allow a single walk and combined to strike out nine. Spears plated John-Ford Griffin in the fifth inning for Iowa's final run of the game on a ground rule double that bounced off over the fence in right field.

Blake Parker threw one inning of relief, striking out two, to pick up his team-leading seventh save, while Samardzija earned his third win.

The Iowa Cubs have an off day tomorrow before taking on the Omaha Royals at Principal Park on Thursday, June 11 at 7:05 p.m. The Famous Chicken will be at the game.
