Beavers Come Up Empty Against Aces, Valdez

PORTLAND, Ore. - Cesar Valdez turned in seven strong innings and teamed with Yusmeiro Petit in the Reno Aces' 3-0, six-hit shutout of the Portland Beavers Monday night at PGE Park.

Valdez (4-4), the scheduled starter who gave way to Petit, who joined the Aces Monday to make a major league rehab start, struck out three and allowed five hits and no walks to win his third straight decision.

Petit, on the Arizona Diamondbacks' 15-day disabled list since May 9 due to a right shoulder strain, struck out one while allowing one hit and a walk in two innings.

With the Beavers (29-30) already short on pitching due to a series of call-ups before the game, Reno (27-32) made Portland's spot starter, Rolando Valdez, throw 39 pitches in the top of the first. Rolando Valdez, who was transferred to Portland before the game from Class AA San Antonio, gave up an RBI single to Rusty Ryal and a bases-loaded walk to Chris Roberson before coming out after an inning. Ryal's liner struck Rolando Valdez (0-1) in the right shin, but the right-hander finished the inning before making way for Walter Silva in the second.

The Aces picked up a third run in the fifth on a pair of singles, two stolen bases and an error.

Kyle Blanks accounted for three of Portland's six hits with singles in the first, fourth and sixth innings. Craig Stansberry was hitless in four at-bats to have his 15-game hitting streak come to an end.

Arturo Lopez, one of five Portland pitchers on the night, gave the Beavers 3 1/3 innings of relief work, allowing just an unearned run and holding the Aces to three hits.

The Beavers conclude their series with Reno Tuesday at 11:05 a.m.

NOTES: It was a busy day of transactions for the Beavers, as pitchers Wade LeBlanc and Edwin Moreno were recalled by San Diego. Additionally, pitcher Mike Adams was taken off his major league rehab assignment, and the Padres optioned pitcher Joe Thatcher and outrighted infielder Chris Burke to Portland ... the Beavers have been shut out three times this season.
