Cubs fall to Isotopes

The Albuquerque Isotopes used the long ball as they defeated the Iowa Cubs 9-6 Thursday night at Principal Park. Mike Burns gave up five runs and three homers in the first inning that allowed Albuquerque to take an early 5-0 lead. Jai Millier highlighted the inning when he hit one of the three home runs, a two-run shot that scored Lorenzo Scott. Dallas McPherson and Tagg Bozied also homered in the first inning. An inning later, Miller hit another home run; this time it was a solo shot to left field to put the Isotopes ahead 6-0. Iowa would remain scoreless until the third inning when Andres Torres walked and reached third on Bobby Scales' single. Micah Hoffpauir doubled to score Torres and move Scales to third base. Scales scored on Ben Broussard's RBI groundout to cut the Isotopes lead, 6-2. Iowa added one more run when Casey McGehee scored in the sixth inning on Josh Kroeger's RBI single. The Isotopes struck again the seventh inning and took advantage of two Iowa errors. Chris Lambin scored on a wild pitch by Iowa's Greg Reinhard and scored two more before the inning would end to up their total, 9-3. Micah Hoffpauir doubled the Cubs' score in the bottom of the ninth inning with a three-run homer, his fourth of the year, however it was all the Cubs would get in the 9-6 final. Burns (5-5) took the loss for Iowa while Albuquerque's Dallas Trahern (3-6) earned the win, allowing three runs over six innings.
