Memphis Redbirds News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Cubs handed the Redbirds their second straight loss on Friday evening, attacking Memphis starter Zach Petrick for eight runs over the right-hander's three innings on the mound.
The first inning was filled with action for both clubs, with the Redbirds kicking off the scoring in the top of the frame.
The red-hot Cody Stanley drove home the first runs of the contest on a two-RBI double, with the third run of the inning for Memphis coming on an Iowa fielding error.
Stanley's double gives the backstop a hit in eight of his last nine games. The 26-year-old is hitting .452 (19-for-42) in July, including collecting seven extra-base hits.
The Cubs answered right back with authority in the bottom of the first, putting up a five-spot on Redbirds' starter Zach Petrick. Iowa would add three more runs in the bottom of the third, chasing Petrick from the contest after just three innings of work. Petrick's eight earned runs match a career high for the 25-year-old, also surrendering eight
runs July 1 of last season against Nashville.
The Redbirds made things interesting in the eighth inning. After a Xavier Scruggs RBI-single, Jeremy Hazelbaker connected on his fourth home run of the season for Memphis, a three-run shot that cut the Cubs lead to 9-7.
Hazelbaker is now hitting .467 (21-for-45) with four home runs, five doubles, and two triples, to go along with his 19 runs driven in.
Memphis managed to get the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Stephen Piscotty was caught stealing to end the ballgame, as the Cubs triumphed over the Redbirds for the second game in a row.
The Redbirds and Cubs continue their four-game set tomorrow from Principal Park when left-hander John Gast (5-6, 4.45) toes the rubber for rubber. He will be opposed by Iowa's Carlos Pimentel (6-4, 3.05) with first pitch from Des Moines set for 7:08pm CT.
