Sky Sox Pounce on Zephyrs Early
July 17, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Jason Rogers continued to torment Zephyrs pitching by hitting a grand slam as the Colorado Springs Sky Sox topped New Orleans on Friday night, 8-2.
After hitting two home runs in Thursday's series opener, Rogers cleared the bases with his fourth-inning slam on Friday to give the Sky Sox a commanding 7-0 lead.
In 15 games this season with Colorado Springs, Rogers has yet to go hitless while accumulating six home runs and 18 RBI.
Jarred Cosart, who was sidelined for several weeks earlier this season while battling vertigo, exited the game after recording just four outs after apparently experiencing more discomfort.
Cosart issued back-to-back walks leading off the second inning, and after allowing a one-out RBI double to Juan Centeno, catcher Jhonatan Solano signaled to the dugout for assistance. Travis Blackley replaced Cosart on the mound and surrendered a two-run single to Elian Herrera.
Herrera's two-out single in the fourth kept a Sky Sox rally alive, and Logan Schafer reached on a bunt singe to load the bases for Rogers, who took Blackley deep for the second grand slam against Z's pitching this season.
Sky Sox starter Josh Roenicke blanked the Zephyrs for five innings before Marcell Ozuna greeted reliever Tim Dillard with a leadoff double in the sixth. Ozuna advanced to third on a Juan Diaz single and scored on Austin Nola's sacrifice fly to get the Z's on the board.
Ozuna, who has now hit safely in each of his seven games with New Orleans, added an RBI single an inning later to boost his batting average to .379. The Zephyrs missed a chance to draw closer when Sky Sox right fielder Matt Long made a lunging catch of Brady Shoemaker's line drive to the warning track to end the inning.
Roenicke (5-7) got the win, while Cosart (0-1) was charged with three runs to suffer the defeat.
The Zephyrs have lost eight of their last 10 games, and will look to get back on track against the Sky Sox in the third game of the series on Saturday at 6 p.m.
