The Iowa Cubs handed the Oklahoma RedHawks their first four-game losing streak of the season with a 9-2 win Thursday night at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Every Cub starter had at least one hit as the Cubs scored nine runs on 15 hits.
Iowa (23-17) broke the game open in the seventh inning with the first two four-run innings. Leading 1-0 the Cubs scored four runs on five hits to push their lead to 5-0. Sean Marshall (2-0) pitched a gem, allowing only one run on two hits in eight innings of work.
The RedHawks (19-20) had to use five pitchers to get through the game. After a visit from trainer prior to the third inning, starter Josh Rupe left the game. Scott Shoemaker (0-1), t he second of four RedHawk relievers, took the loss by allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 2.1 innings of relief. Marlon Byrd hit his team-leading fifth homer of the season for the RedHawks.
Game 2 of the four-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. CDT Friday at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
