Memphis Redbirds News Release

Memphis, Tenn. - The 2007 Memphis Redbirds' STRIPES season will come to a close on Friday, May 18, with two championship games determining this year's baseball and softball champions.

The softball tournament, which began with 24 teams, has been narrowed down to top-seeded White Station from the East division hosting JP Freeman from the South division in the championship game to be played at Tobey Park. First pitch is slated for 3:30pm.

White Station has run through the tournament, outscoring their opponents 38-5 en route to the championship game. J. P. Freeman, from the South division has played just as well, beating their opponents 42-10, including a 24-3 victory over Snowden South on Monday.

In the baseball tournament, top-ranked White Station from the East division will play host to Cordova the number two seed also from the East division, with first pitch set for 3:30pm at Tobey Park.

White Station eased through the first two rounds of the tournament, winning both games by a combined score of 32-0, before beating Colonial in a 7-3 game to advance to the championship. Cordova took the same route, winning 9-0 and 17-1 in their first two games before defeating Ridgeway 7-3 to advance.

In contrast to the Redbirds' RBI program, which is run during the summer months, STRIPES (Sports Teams Returning In the Public Education System) runs during the school year. In 1992, funding for baseball and softball at the middle and junior high school levels was cut from the Memphis City School system's budget. In 1998, the Memphis Redbirds Baseball Foundation began the STRIPES program to replace that funding and for the first time in six years, children were afforded the opportunity to put on a baseball uniform, take the field and play ball.
