Lake County Captains News Release
(SOUTH BEND, IN) - The Lake County Captains (50-42) and the South Bend Cubs (53-41) played their second straight extra-innings game, with South Bend taking it 7-6 in 10 innings on a clear and sunny Friday night at Four Winds Field.
Wade Miley made the rehab start for the Cubs and in his first appearance back in a South Bend jersey since 2009, the Captains tacked four runs on him. Lake County took an early advantage 1-0 in the top of the first after a *Joe Naranjo* RBI single.
The Cubs responded and jumped on Captains starter Aaron Davenport for five runs. South Bend delivered three singles, and Jack DeGroat finished the inning for Lake County.
The Captains in the third inning had five runs of their own. The first three batters reached, Angel Martinez walked, Joe Naranjo singled and Alexfri Planez drove in Martinez with a base knock. Following a strikeout, Milan Tolentino sliced a ball to right-center field plating Naranjo and then Tolentino forced a rundown and then an error that scored Planez. The tying run came off a Mike Amditis sacrifice fly, and the go-ahead run was due to an error at third base.
Jordan Jones in relief for Lake County settled everything down by setting nine Cubs down. Jones did permit the eventual tying runner on base allowing a double, his only hit. Alaska Abney entered and escaped two on, but South Bend did knot up the score at 6-6 with a groundout.
In the seventh and eighth, the Cubs left two runners on base, Brian Eichorn finished both innings. Luis Devers got a pickoff for South Bend and kept the Captains off the board from the fourth through the eighth.
In the ninth, Lake County went down 1-2-3, and despite allowing a walk Eichorn pushed the game to extras and completed 2.1 scoreless.
All three Captains in the tenth went down on strikes, facing Hunter Bigge. Matt Turner pitched the tenth for Lake County, and after a bunt single that moved the winning runner 90 feet away, the left-hander fired a wild pitch that ended the game.
The Captains went 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position, despite a season-worst five errors from the Cubs.
Game five between Lake County and South Bend will be tomorrow Saturday, July 30. The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
