Cubs Blank Dragons for Second Straight Day, Win 10-0
July 7, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Cubs News Release
Dayton, OH: The South Bend Cubs pitching staff has not allowed a run since the 3rd inning against the West Michigan Whitecaps on Friday night. On Sunday afternoon from Fifth Third Field against the Dayton Dragons, South Bend finished off their second straight shutout by a final of 10-0.
Starting pitcher Riley Thompson got the day off and rolling by setting the tone with a lot of soft contact from Dayton. The tall and hard-throwing righty struck out three batters in his five innings of work and did not walk a batter.
South Bend starting pitching has not walked a Dragon in the series after Cam Sanders tossed five innings with no walks yesterday.
By adding their shutout performances yesterday and today, along with the final stretch in West Michigan on Friday, Cubs pitching has not allowed a run in 25 consecutive innings.
Offensively, the Cubs scored in their first time up against Dayton starter Alexis Diaz. After Clayton Daniel reached to start the game on an error, he eventually made it to third base where Fidel Mejia brought him in with a RBI groundout to make it 1-0.
The Cubs scored at least two runs in each of the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings and positioned themselves to win the game thanks to that scoring outburst. In the 6th, the big inning got started on a Clayton Daniel two-run base hit to make it a 7-0 South Bend lead.
Since making his 2019 debut with the Cubs in the last road series, Daniel has played in three games with South Bend and has driven in five runs. Daniel finished the day on base five separate times. He scored three runs.
Also packing the stat sheet on Sunday were infielders Chris Morel and Fidel Mejia. Morel went 3/5 with a triple and a RBI. Mejia picked up two RBI and two hits.
With the win, the Cubs are 47-38 overall and 10-7 to start the Midwest League's second half. They will go for the series sweep tomorrow night with first pitch at.7:00 PM. Lefty Brendon Little is the expected starter for South Bend.
