CORPUS CHRISTI - Hooks left-handed pitcher Luis Cruz earned Texas League Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending September 1 after he tossed a complete game shutout August 26 at San Antonio. In just his second start at Double-A, he allowed two hits, one walk and struck out 14 while throwing 109 pitches.
Cruz also pitched an inning of shutout relief Friday at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco.
The Puerto Rican southpaw made his Hooks debut August 17 after he pitched the first four and a half months of the season for Advanced-A Lancaster. In 27 games, 18 starts, for the JetHawks, Cruz went 8-6 with a 5.16 ERA. He walked 40 and struck out 129 in 113.1 innings pitched.
With 150 strikeouts between his two stops in 2013, Cruz led all Astros farmhands in strikeouts, eight ahead of Lancaster's Vincent Velasquez.
Houston selected Cruz in the ninth round of the 2008 draft out of Academia Santa Monica in Puerto Rico. His best minor league season came at Class-A Lexington in 2010 when he went 8-5 with a 3.61 earned run average in 20 games, 16 of them starts.
