Luis Cruz struck out 10 batters in seven and two-thirds innings, and the Lexington Legends took the opener of a four-game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds 4-1 Thursday night at Applebee's Park.

Cruz, a left-hander, allowed six hits and one run, and did not walk a batter as he improved his record to 5-2. The 10 strikeouts are a single-game high for a Legends pitcher this season.

The Legends took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Jose Altuve doubled, stole third base and scored on a double by Jake Goebbert.

Delmarva evened the score in the fourth inning. Ty Kelly singled, advanced to second on an infield out and scored on a double by Kieron Pope.

Lexington took the lead for good in the fifth. Grant Hogue beat out a bunt and went to third on a single by Altuve. Altuve stole second for his 39th steal of the year, good for second in the South Atlantic League. Goebbert followed with another double, scoring Hogue and Altuvea to give the Legends a 3-1 lead. Goebbert's two doubles increased his league-leading total to 33. He also drove in three runs for the second consecutive game. The Legends added a run in the eighth without a hit as the Shorebirds committed two errors.

Wander Alvino relieved Cruz and got the final out in the eighth inning, and Kirk Clark pitched a scoreless ninth for his league-leading 23rd save.

Delmarva starter Patrick Kantekevich (0-4) was the losing pitcher.

The series continues Friday night at Applebee's Park. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

Attendance at Applebee's Park: 5,153
