Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

HICKORY, NC - The Kannapolis Intimidators benefitted from a fatal mental mistake by the Hickory Crawdads in the sixth inning and saw their starter Justin Collop throw another strong outing as he becomes the team leader in wins in a 4-1 victory on Thursday night in Hickory.

In a 1-0 ballgame in the sixth inning, Robbie Erlin (5-3) had been working well and looking to complete his day of six scoreless innings as he allowed a slow roller to the right side with runners at the corners with two down. Instead of fielding and throwing to first, the Crawdads second baseman tried a back-handed flip to second base which was both late and off line despite having the opportunity to throw Nick Ciolli out at first. The runner from third scored, and it extended the inning for the next batter Jose Vargas to hit a 3-R home run to break the 1-1 tie and eventually win the game.

Collop (8-7) becomes the first Intimidators (15-18) pitcher to get eight wins on the season allowed only a two-out double in the second as he scattered five hits in seven innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. Chase Cooney tossed a clean eighth retiring all three batters he faced and Orlando Santos walked the first batter in the ninth before getting the next three in order for his eighth save in as many opportunities.

Erlin had thrown 13.2 scoreless before the four runs allowed with two down in the sixth. He was spelled by three relievers who all kept the game 4-1.

The Intimidators have won five of six and eight of their last ten to get within three games of .500 and have Andre Rienzo on the hill putting a 21 inning shutout streak on the line against Jacob Brigham at 7:00 pm on Friday in Hickory for game two of a four game series.
