Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Kannapolis Intimidators rode DH Jose Vargas' three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning en route to a 4-1 win over the Hickory Crawdads, before 1,919 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Thursday night. RF Jared Prince extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a single in the bottom of the first inning.
The Crawdads (58-44, 18-14) took an early advantage in the bottom of the second frame against Kannapolis starter RHP Justin Collop (8-7, 4.59 ERA). With one out, CF Jared Bolden singled to right field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. One out later, 1B Mike Ortiz smacked an RBI double to right-center field to score Bolden and put the 'Dads up, 1-0.
After Hickory starter LHP Robbie Erlin (5-3, 1.97 ERA) dealt five scoreless innings, at one point recording 11-straight outs, the Intimidators (46-56, 15-18) finally got on the board in the top of the sixth. 2B Daniel Wagner led off the inning with a single and moved up to second and then third on a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly, respectively. After 1B Ian Gac walked to put runners on the corners with two outs, CF Nick Ciolli grounded into an RBI fielder's choice, on which everyone reached safely, including Wagner coming in from third to tie the game, 1-1. Vargas took advantage of the extended frame by hitting his seventh home run of the season, driving in three runs and putting Kannapolis ahead, 4-1.
Erlin allowed four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five in six innings to get saddled with the tough luck loss for Hickory. LHP Joseph Ortiz, RHP Johan Yan, and RHP Sam Brown each dealt one scoreless and hitless inning of relief down the stretch.
Collop dealt the first seven frames and picked up the win for the Intimidators. After RHP Chase Cooney pitched a scoreless eighth, RHP Orlando Santos tossed a scoreless ninth for the save for the Intimidators.
