Crushers Swept for the First Time this Season
August 9, 2019 - Frontier League (FL) - Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy Health, have not started off the month of August well. Evansville completed the sweep on Thursday night and beat the Crushers 5-2 making the Crushers overall record in the month of August 2-5.
The Crushers (38-35) lose their seventh game in their last ten with the loss. While the Otters (42-32) win their fifth game in their last ten with the win.
Jake Repavich (4-5) started the game for Lake Erie and got the loss as he gave up four runs on 10 hits, walked three and struck out three over 6.0 innings. Tyler Beardsley (7-3) picked up the win and pitched extremely well in this one. Beardsley gave up one run on six hits, walked three and struck out 12 over his 6.2 innings of work. Cam Opp (1) earned his first save of the season as he pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the win for Evansville.
Unlike the night before, the scoring started early in this game. The Crushers put up their first run in the top of second inning. Jake Vieth smoked the first pitch of the inning off Beardsley for a lead off single. Beardsley walked John Cable to advance Vieth into scoring position, but then struck out Dre Hubbard for the first out of the inning. Karl Ellison came up big for the Crushers and smoked an RBI double and make it 1-0.
But the lead did not last long. In the next half inning, Elijah MacNamee hit a lead off single. Repavich made quick work of the next two batters and got them out with a strike out and a fly out. Tanner Wetrich kept the inning going though with a two out single to move MacNamee to second. Moments later Hunter Cullen hit an RBI single to score MacNamee and tie the game.
The Otters took the lead two innings later in the bottom of the fourth. Repavich walked the first batter of the inning then gave up a single to put runners on first and second with no outs. Wetrich laid down a sac bunt to move both runners over 90 feet. Cullen proved to be Repavich's kryptonite in this game and hit a bases clearing single to make it a 3-1 Otters lead.
Evansville added a run an inning later. Repavich got the first two batters of the inning out but then issued back-to-back two out walks. Jack Meggs then stepped up and hit an RBI single to make it a three-run Otters lead.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Evansville added their final run of the game. MacNamee hit a one out double and then score a batter later on an RBI single from Meggs.
Vieth was responsible for Lake Erie's final run as he smashed his 11th homer of the year over the right field fence to make it a 5-2 game.
The Crushers will start a three-game series with the Joliet Slammers on Friday at Sprenger Health Care Stadium in Avon, Ohio. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
