Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers surrendered four homers to the Normal CornBelters at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday night, as the 'Belters took the series finale, in a 6-0 victory.
The loss for the Crushers (34-46) was their fifth in their last seven games, while the victory for the CornBelters (49-32) set a franchise record for most wins in a season.
Normal registered six extra base hits on the night, including four homeruns, while the Crushers were limited to just three hits on the evening.
For the third night in a row, the CornBelters struck first. The 'Belters took the early advantage on their first homer of the night. With a runner on first and one out in the top of the second, Ozney Guillen smashed a two-run homer to right, his sixth of the season to give Normal a 2-0 lead.
Normal used the long ball to extend their advantage in the top of the third, as Aaron Dudley hit a solo homer to right. The homerun was his second of the series, and his eighth of the season.
Guillen struck again for the 'Belters in the top of the fourth inning, as he belted a RBI double to the gap in right center. Normal used the long ball again in the top of the fifth, as Pat McKenna belted his 20th homerun of the season, giving them a 5-0 lead.
The CornBelters scored their final run on their fourth and final homer of the night. Santiago Chirino belted his second homer of the season in the top of the ninth to bring in the game's final run.
Kevin Johnson (7-4) held the Crushers in check all night long, tossing seven scoreless innings on only three hits while fanning seven batters to score the win, which was his second against the Crushers this season. Brad Zambron (3-6) took the loss for the Crushers after allowing five runs on five hits over 6.1 innings of action.
While only three Crushers hit safely on the night and Juan Sanchez had Lake Erie's only extra base hit with a double in the seventh, Brendan Costantino reached three times in four plate appearances. The Crushers were never able to advance a runner beyond second base.
The Crushers will begin a three game series with the Joliet Slammers at All Pro Freight Stadium on Friday night. Right-hander Trevor Longfellow (5-6, 2.06) will start for the Crushers. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
