O'Fallon, MO - The Rascals (46-34) won their fifth straight game by defeating the Southern Illinois Miners (50-30) 6-2 on Wednesday, August 19 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
RHP Dane Stone (W, 7-4) earned the win in his second start of the season against the Miners. After tossing 4.0 scoreless innings in a no-decision on May 20 at Southern Illinois, he surrendered just two runs and four hits in 5.0 frames. The righty walked one and struck out two batters. The Rascals took a 3-0 lead in the second inning and never relinquished their advantage. DH Danny Canela hit a one-out single, and 1B Zach Kometani walked. Two batters later, C Josh Ludy hit a three-run homerun to put the Rascals on top for the second consecutive day; Ludy hit a two-run shot in the second inning in the series opener on Tuesday. The longball was Ludy's 11th of the season.
The Miners responded with two runs of their own in the next inning. Steve Marino led off with a single, and Toby DeMello hit a two-run homer, his fourth of the year. Southern Illinois would not score again.
Kometani singled, and 2B Hector Crespo doubled to put two men in scoring position for Ludy in the fourth frame. Ludy then collected his fourth RBI of the night on a sac fly that scored Kometani.
The Rascals added another run in the sixth inning. Kometani hit a lead off single, stole second, and advanced to third on a Ludy single. With men on the corners and one out, SS Johnny Morales laid down a suicide squeeze bunt, giving the Rascals a 5-2 advantage.
In the eighth, Morales collected his second RBI of the night and the final Rascal run. After Crespo walked and stole second and third, Morales hit a two-out double.
Miners starter Rick Teasley (L, 8-3) took just his third loss of the season. He was charged with five earned runs over 6.0 innings. He surrendered eight hits and three walks.
RHP Joe Pavlovich was the fist man out of the bullpen for the Rascals. He tossed 3.1 innings and worked into the ninth inning. He allowed one hit and one walk after retiring the first nine men he faced. He matched a career-high with four strikeouts. RHP Derek Cape added 0.1 inning with a walk and a punchout. RHP Victor Beriguete (S, 4) earned the save after facing one batter, striking out pinch hitter Marquis Riley with the bases loaded to end the game.
