Slammers Swept by Florence in Double Header

Joliet, IL- The Joliet Slammers (33-48) were unable to win the series against the Florence Freedom (38-43) dropping both games of a double header on Thursday.

In game one Florence was able to get their bats going with two outs in the first. DH Austin Newell doubled and was driven in by a 1B Sam Eberle single to right field making it 1-0 visitors.

In the third inning CF Zac Mitchell clobbered a ball to center field and made his way to third. On the relay Max Casper's throw hit Mitchell and went out of play, awarding him home plate and doubling the lead to 2-0.

The offense continued for Florence in the fourth with back to back singles by Sam Eberle and C Isaac Wenrich. RF Collins Cuthrell followed with a walk to load the bases. Slammers' starter Andrew Strenge would get two outs but 3B Steve Carrillo singled to left scoring Eberle which extended the lead to 3-0.

Joliet would put a dent into the deficit in the fourth. C Joe Staley singled and was able to jog home on a DH Marc Flores bomb, his second in as many games cutting it to 3-2 Florence. LF Hunter Ridge would single which chased starter Cody Gray from the game and bring in Pete Levitt. Ridge found his way to third as the tying run but was stranded there. 3-2 after four.

Florence got those runs back in the sixth when Isaac Wenrich singled was driven in by a Collins Cuthrell two run shot pushing the lead to three.

The Slammers went quietly in their final two at bats. Ed Kohout came in to close it out in the seventh for his fifteenth save of the year. Pete Levitt's relief efforts earned him the win (4-2) and Andrew Strenge got the loss (6-7). Our Merchants and Manufacturers Bank Player of the Game was Marc Flores who was 1-for-2 with his third homer of the year.

Just like game one, Florence scored in the top of the first. 2B Daniel Fraga led off with a walk and stole second. C Sam Eberle would later single to right center field that allowed Fraga to cruise home for the first run of the game. Eberle would also steal second base and would score on a RF Frazier Hall single to push the Freedom lead to two.

The Slammers knotted the game in the second. 1B Joe Staley singled and trotted home on a C Jack Cleary homerun. 2-2 after a pair of frames.

The Freedom regained the lead in the third. Daniel Fraga walked and advanced to third botched pickoff attempt. He would score when CF Zac Mitchell bounced out to Mason Snyder at second.

In the fourth inning things got interesting. RF Frazier Hall led off with a single on the first pitch. 1B Isaac Wenrich powered one over the wall for a two run shot making it 5-2. The offense continued with a LF Andrew Godbold double. 3B Steve Carrillo singled him home to make it a four run ball game. Carrillo advanced to second on a Fraga putout. Zac Mitchell sent a ball into left center field that Carter Bell fielded and threw home. As Jack Cleary was fielding the throw and ready to tag, Carrillo, who was out, mowed over the Slammers' catcher. This sparked a confrontation that cleared the benches. Both Cleary and Carrillo were ejected and the appropriate substitutions were made.

Florence added some insurance in the seventh off of reliever Sam Moore. 3B Zac Mitchell singled to get it started. DH Austin Newell walked. Sam Eberle singled and scored Mitchell. Frazier Hall hit a fly ball that moved Newell and Eberle up a base to second and third. Collins Cuthrell grabbed a pair of runs batted in with a single making it 9-2 and forcing Sam Moore to exit. John Cannon came in to record the final two outs.

Seth Harvey finished off the final three innings for Florence giving up four hits but no runs to seal the win. Pete Levitt earned his second win of the day (5-2), kevin Walter was handed the loss (2-7). Our Merchants and Manufacturers Bank Player of the Game was Jack Cleary who hit a two run shot in his only at bat before being ejected. The Slammers hit the road for a weekend series with the Lake Erie Crushers (34-46) Friday at 7:05 pmCST.
