EVANSVILLE, INDIANA. -- The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, dropped the series opener with the Evansville Otters but responded with a big win in the back end of the doubleheader.

Evansville opened the scoring against Crushers starter Mason Klotz (2-3). In the third inning, Ryan Long homered to give the Otters a 1-0 lead. A two-run shot from Daniel Spingola made it 3-0 in the fourth inning. Klotz went 4.2 innings while allowing four runs on three hits. He walked four.

The Crushers got a run in the fifth after Bryan DeLaRosa tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly. Evansville answered with three runs of their own and took a 6-1 lead. They added a run in the sixth and defeated the Crushers 7-1. Otters starter Austin Nicely (4-3) went the distance while striking out six.

Joel McKeithan and Doug Trimble had two hits in the loss.

Game two featured a strong start by Crushers pitcher Justin Sinibaldi and a timely hit by Dalton Wheat. Sinibaldi went four scoreless innings while striking out four. He allowed just one hit.

Lake Erie took the lead in the second inning when Sean Hurley hit a sacrifice fly to score Trimble. Otters starter Chris Amato went just three innings while allowing one run.

Trimble provided some insurance in the fourth inning when he blasted his fifth home run of the season, making it 2-0. The Crushers added a run in the fifth and seemed to be in control with a 3-0 lead.

Evansville rallied in the fifth against reliever Kent Hasler. The Otters would score three runs on three hits and an error. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Hasler remained in the game. The right-hander responded by striking out the side and keeping the game tied.

In the sixth inning, the Crushers started a two-out rally of their own. Dustin Williams doubled and the Otters intentionally walked Hurley to face Mason Brown. The Crushers catcher worked a walk before Dalton Wheat delivered a two-run single. Lake Erie led 5-3 and held on to win by that score.

Seth Lucio (1-1) eared the win in relief while Logan Lombana earned his first save. Garrett Harris (2-2) took the loss.

Lake Erie (30-25) will send their ace, Sean Renzi (6-3) to the mound tomorrow. Evansville (27-27) will turn to Spencer Medick (1-0). Game time is 6:35 CDT.
