Lake Erie Crushers News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI. -- The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, rallied late on Thursday night to force extra innings before defeating the Traverse City Beach Bums 8-7 in 11 innings. With the win, Lake Erie has now won seven straight road series. They are also 4-2 on their current nine game road trip.
Lake Erie took a 2-0 lead against starter John Havird in the first inning. Aaron Hill scored on a wild pitch and Dustin Williams drove in Doug Trimble with an RBI single.
Crushers starter Donny Murray allowed a run in the first off of an RBI double by Will Kengor. Traverse City took the lead in the fourth, after a two-run home run from Max Dutto made it 3-2.
The top of the Crushers order would tie the game in the fifth after a leadoff triple by Hill who later scored on a single by Kewby Meyer. Those two combined for six hits in the win.
Kengor continued his big night in the fifth when he took Murray deep for a two-run home run. Kengor finished a triple shy of the cycle in the loss.
Murray finished with five innings pitched while allowing five runs on six hits in a no decision. On the other side, Havird went six while allowing three runs in a no decision.
The middle part of the Crushers bullpen was strong. Austin Orvis worked two scoreless innings and Kent Hasler also pitched two scoreless. Hasler worked his way out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth as well.
In the ninth, the Crushers saw their rally start with a double by Hill who finished with three hits. Meyer followed with an RBI double, trimming the deficit to one. Later with the Crushers down to their last strike, pitch hitter Bryan DeLaRosa delivered a game-tying single off of the glove of first baseman Steve Lohr. Both runs were charged to closer John Michael Knighton.
In the top of the 10th, Lake Erie got a leadoff double by Mason Brown who moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Dane Hutcheon. Hill was then hit by Andrew Click bringing Meyer to the plate. Meyer doubled home two runs, giving the Crushers a 7-5 lead.
The Beach Bums rallied in the bottom of the inning against Louis Cohen who issued three walks before Isaac Benard tied the game with a single. Max Biedrzycki (5-0) got the last out of the inning.
Lake Erie (25-17) took the lead for good in the 11th inning. An RBI triple by Williams scored Trimble and the Crushers had an 8-7 lead. Biedrzycki got the last three outs in the 11th and Lake Erie clinched the series. Traverse City falls to 18-23 with the loss.
