Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy Health, fell victim to a few big innings on Friday evening at Sprenger Healthcare Stadium, as they dropped the opening game of their series to the Southern Illinois Miners, 8-2.

The loss for the Crushers (31-27) was their fifth in their last six games at home, while the Miners (26-28) snapped a four-game slide with the win.

The game was scoreless through three innings until the Miners struck for two in the fourth. Joe Dudek, who drove in three runs on the night, snapped a scoreless tie by leading off the fourth inning with a solo homer to center, his eighth of the year. A two out error extended the inning for Joe Duncan who stroked a single to center to score Jake Willsey.

Lake Erie was within striking distance until the Miners broke the game open with a four-run seventh inning. Romeo Cortina walked to start the inning and came around to score on a wild pitch. Dudek doubled in the next two runs and Willsey smacked a run scoring single to complete the four-run frame.

The Crushers scored their first run in the bottom of the eighth. Bryan DeLaRosa started the inning with a triple to left, and he came around to score on Dalton Wheat's sacrifice fly.

The Miners added two more runs in the top of the ninth. Harrison Bragg scored on Willsey's sacrifice fly and Max Dutto scored on a balk.

Doug Trimble hit a solo homer for the Crushers in the bottom of the ninth to plate the game's final run. The solo shot to left was his sixth of the season.

Southern Illinois righty Kurt Heyer (5-5) pitched eight great innings and allowed just a run on five hits while fanning nine batters to score the victory. Newly acquired lefty Oriel Caicedo (0-1) took the loss for the Crushers after allowing a pair of runs on five hits over five innings.

Dane Hutcheon and Aaron Hill paced the Crushers offensively with two hits each.

The Crushers will continue their three game series against the Southern Illinois Miners at Sprenger Healthcare Stadium on Saturday night. Right-hander Micah Beyer (0-0, 0.00) will get the start for the Crushers. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
