Crunch Victorious in Overtime

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - After dwindling away a two-goal lead, Olivier Archambault scored the game-winner in overtime to lift the Syracuse Crunch over the Springfield Thunderbirds, 3-2, and sweep the two-game season series tonight at the MassMutual Center.

Gabriel Dumont and Matthew Peca helped build up a 2-0 lead before the Thunderbirds climbed back in the third period. Archambault netted his eight of the year in the extra frame to advance Syracuse to 38-19-3-4 on the season.

Goaltender Louis Domingue stopped 26-of-28 shots in net for the Crunch, while Harri Sateri turned aside 32-of-35 for the Thunderbirds. Syracuse converted one 1-of-6 power play opportunities and stopped 3-of-4 Springfield man-advantages.

The Crunch opened scoring with a shorthanded goal 13:47 into the first frame. Mat Bodie threw a pass down low for Gabriel Dumont to redirect across the goal line on the backhand for his 100th career AHL goal. Michael Bournival earned the secondary helper.

Syracuse built a two-goal lead with a power-play goal late in the second period. After quick puck movement around the zone, Bournival fed Erik Condra for a one-timer from the right faceoff dot. Sateri stopped the shot, but left the rebound out for Peca to clean up as he cut down the left wing.

The Thunderbirds finally got on the board 4:48 into the final stanza. Josh Brown fired as he cut across the slot. Curtis Valk tipped the puck past Domingue to pull the team back within one. Greg Chase earned a point on the play.

Springfield tied the game halfway through the third when Francois Beauchemin ripped a slap shot from the blue line while on the power play. Jayce Hawryluk and Chase Balisy assisted on the equalizer.

Two minutes into the overtime period, Archambault undressed the defense when he deked towards the center then cut back to his forehand in front of Sateri to pull him out of position and slid the puck past his right foot. Carter Verhaeghe and Bodie assisted on the game-winner.

The Crunch return home to host the Laval Rocket tomorrow at 7 p.m.
