April 14, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY - A sellout crowd saw the Crunch take another step toward clinching a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Connecticut Whale tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
Patrick Maroon's game-winning shootout goal gave the Crunch a chance to clinch their spot in the playoffs with their last regular season game against the Albany Devils tomorrow.
Riley Holzapfel got the Crunch on the board first by one-timing the rebound of a Kyle Palmieri shot past Whale netminder Cameron Talbot. Holzapfel's score came with 7:04 remaining in the first period and the Crunch carried the lead into the first intermission.
The Whale's Jonathan Audy-Marchessault tied the score at one with a two-on-one power play goal at the 11:48 mark of the second period. The remainder of the period went scoreless with Connecticut leading shots on goal 32 to 22 at its conclusion.
Neither team could score in the third period or in overtime, forcing a shootout. Maroon and Holzapfel each scored and Iiro Tarkki stopped all four of Connecticut's shots.
