Monsters Eliminated from Playoff Contention in Season Finale

April 14, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release

A win on Saturday would have punched the Lake Erie Monsters ticket to the playoffs, but the Rochester Americans had other thoughts: Amerks goalie David Leggio stopped 35 Lake Erie shots as the Monsters fell 2-1 before a crowd of 12,410 at Quicken Loans Arena in the Monsters regular season finale. With the Milwaukee Admirals and Charlotte Checkers both winning their respective games later Saturday night, the Monsters are now officially eliminated from playoff contention. The Monsters close the regular season with a record of 37-29-3-7.

Paul Szczechura tipped home a Brayden McNabb pass at 7:52 of the opening period to give Rochester a 1-0 lead, which they would maintain through the end of the first period.

Patrick Rissmiller tied the game at 1-1 for the Monsters just 10 seconds into the second period when he roofed a puck from the left circle over the shoulder of Leggio on the power play. Karl Stollery and Mike Connolly assisted on Rissmiller's 13th of the season. The middle frame would end with the score still knotted at 1-1.

Luke Adam scored to give Rochester a 2-1 lead on a high wrist shot from the high slot at 4:14 of the third period, which would be the eventual game-winning goal.

Monsters goaltender Cedrick Desjardins' record falls to 16-11-5; he stopped 24 of 26 shots. Leggio stopped 35 of 36 shots for Rochester, and he finishes the campaign 28-24-2.
