HAMILTON, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins 5-2 in the Pizza Pizza Fan Appreciation Game in front 4,273 fans at Copps Coliseum.
The Griffins took advantage of a 2-on-1 opportunity to take an early lead in the game. Willie Coetzee's shot trickled past Bulldogs netminder Robert Mayer with 2:20 played in the first period. Tomas Tatar made it 2-0 Griffins at 8:49, getting a pad save rebound up high. With 6:42 left in the period, Philip DeSimone tucked the puck past Grand Rapids goaltender Jordan Pearce to put the 'Dogs on the board. Then, Blake Geoffrion scored his fifth of the season with just 3:08 left to tie the game at 2 after 20 minutes.
The Bulldogs continued to have success scoring on the penalty kill, recording their sixth shorthanded goal of the season at 7:30 in the second period. Andreas Engqvist snuck the puck between Pearce's pad and the near post, losing his stick in the process but earning his 20th goal of the season to give the 'Dogs a 3-2 lead. Aaron Palushaj took advantage of a power play opportunity to score his 14th of the season, making it 4-2 Bulldogs at the end of the second period.
Louis Leblanc scored his 11th of the season at 4:29 in the third period, earning his second point of the night to put the 'Dogs up 5-2 and secure the victory.
