Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
Williamsport took the season series over the State College Spikes with a 7-2 win at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Monday afternoon.
Roman Quinn came home in the first inning to become the Williamsport short-season record holder for runs scored. It came on a two-run double by Cameron Perkins, who finished 3-for-5 with two runs driven in. Larry Greene added an RBI-single later in the inning to put the Crosscutters ahead 3-0.
Starter Manaure Martinez struggled, but survived despite throwing 32 balls on 58 pitches. He walked five batters in 3.1 innings, but only allowed two runs. In the first inning, Samuel Gonzalez cut into the Cutters lead with an RBI-triple to right field. Gonzalez tried to come home on the play but was tagged out.
The Spikes offense was not effective. Despite drawing nine walks, State College tallied just four hits and went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
An error by Logan Moore allowed the Spikes to cut it to 3-2 in the fourth. And after Martinez loaded the bases with one out, Jon Musser came in and masterfully got out of the jam, inducing a Walker Gourley pop-up and a Chris Diaz groundout.
The Williamsport offense responded with a four-spot in the fifth. Quinn drove in Moore with a liner to left. Then, Jiandido Tromp hit a sac fly to deep center to score Gustavo Gonzalez. Quinn then scored on an error by Yhonathan Barrios before Perkins plated on a wild pitch.
Musser shut State College down from there, tossing 3.2 innings of hitless ball. Luis Gonzalez came in late to lock down the win as Williamsport improves to 29-45 on the season in their final road game of the year.
Williamsport returns to Bowman Field for the final two games of the year against Auburn. First pitch Tuesday is at 7:05. Every Cutters game can be heard on ESPN Radio 104.1 FM, ESPN 1050 AM, or online at crosscutters.com.
