Herrera Heads up Spikes Offense, But 'Cutters Take 7-2 Decision

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Dilson Herrera put together another superb offensive performance with a pair of hits, including a double, but the Williamsport Crosscutters used a pair of big innings to get past the State College Spikes, 7-2, in a late afternoon Labor Day matchup on Monday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Herrera is now 6-for-9 at the plate since homering on Saturday night at Jamestown to give State College (33-41) the victory. The Cartagena, Colombia native also scored a run for the Spikes in the fourth after a bizarre play in which Logan Moore's throw back to the pitcher went over Manny Martinez's head for an error.

State College fell behind in the first inning after Williamsport (29-45) put together three straight hits to begin the game, starting with Roman Quinn's bunt single and ending with a two-run double from Cameron Perkins. After Spikes starter Joely Rodriguez (3-4) recorded the first out of the game, Larry Greene singled in Perkins to make it 3-0, Crosscutters.

The Spikes would bounce back to score a run in the bottom half of the first. D.J. Crumlich drew the first of nine walks for State College at the plate, then scored on Samuel Gonzalez's triple to right field to make the score 3-1

Herrera then scored in the fourth to bring the Spikes within one run, and State College loaded the bases with one out against Williamsport starter Manny Martinez. However, Martinez then left the game to be replaced by reliever Jon Musser (2-4), who recorded a popout and a groundout to halt the Spikes' surge.

The Crosscutters then scored four runs on a total of five hits and two errors in the fifth inning to complete the scoring and salt away the victory. Quinn, Jiandido Tromp and Perkins each knocked in a run, with another scoring on a wild pitch by Josh Smith.

The nine walks that State College drew as a team was the highest for any single game in the Spikes' 2012 season. Seven of the bases on balls came after just four pitches. The Spikes also matched a season high by turning three double plays in the game.

Rodriguez took the loss after yielding all seven Crosscutters runs on 11 hits and a walk. The southpaw also struck out one batter in his last start of the season. Ryan Hafner tossed three scoreless innings to finish the game for State College.

Musser earned the win for Williamsport after giving up just two walks and striking out two batters over 3 2/3 shutout innings. Martinez allowed both Spikes runs on three hits and five walks while hitting a batter and striking out two over 3 1/3 innings.

Perkins ended the game 3-for-5 with a double, two runs batted in and two runs scored for Williamsport.

Tuesday, the Spikes start the last series of the 2012 season as they welcome the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians) to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a 7:05 p.m. game. Right-hander Tyler Glasnow (0-0), who started for the GCL Pirates in the championship-clinching game of the GCL playoffs on Wednesday, will get the ball for his first start with State College. Mahoning Valley's starter has not yet been announced.

Plus, the first 100 Penn State students showing a valid ID at the table on the concourse will be able to receive a free hot dog thanks to Lions Crossing, Nittany Crossing and State College Park .
