Lowell Spinners News Release
BROOKLYN, NY. - After falling in their most recent attempt to get to .500, things have spiraled downward for the Lowell Spinners as the lost their fifth straight as the season's end approaches, falling to the Brooklyn Cyclones Monday night at MCU Park, 4-1.
Lowell (34-40) got on the board first, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Mike Miller led off the inning with a single, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jose Colorado. A Deven Marrero groundout moved Miller to third and Jake Davies brought him home on an RBI single.
Brooklyn (45-29) answered in the bottom half of the inning, After a one-out single and walk by Nelfi Zapata sandwiched the inning's second out, Frank Montas was lifted in favor of Francisco Taveras and Juan Gamboa greeted the NYPL All-Star with a single to left-center to even the score at one.
The Cyclones took the lead in the fifth, loading the bases with one out. An infield single by Kevin Plawecki brought home a run to give Brooklyn a one run lead they would not relinquish.
Brooklyn would pad their lead in the eighth, taking advantage of a wild streak from Taveras and a lead-off error by Nick Moore. After the first two men reached to lead off the inning, a sacrifice bunt moved both men into scoring position. An intentional walk loaded the bases and it paid off as Brandon Nimmo grounded into a force out, as Davies came home to get the innings second out. A bases loaded walk followed and an infield single by Philip Evan gave the Cyclones all the runs they would need heading into the ninth up, 4-1.
The Spinners did bring the potential tying run to the plate after Miller led off the inning with a double and Davies singled to second with two outs, forcing Brooklyn starter Luis Cessa from the game, but Moore grounded out to end the game.
In his New York-Penn League debut, fire-balling righthander Frank Montas allowed one run on five hits, walking one in 3.2 innings. He struck out four before giving way to Taveras (6-3, 1.99). Taveras struggled with his control, walking four, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits in four innings. He struck out one. Gerardo Olivares came on to retire the only batter he would face.
The Spinners' were stymied offensively by Cessa for 8.2 innings, picking up just six hits. Miller and Davies led the way, each picking up two hits, while Marrero and Jose Colorado had the only other Spinner hits. The top four men in the Spinner line-up went 6-for-15, while the bottom five batters went 0-for-15 with a Moore walk the only base runner produced.
Lowell looks to stop the skid Tuesday night for a 6:05 first pitch when Justin Haley gets the ball.
