
Stewart Smacks Two Homers in Tigers Win

STATEN ISLAND, NY-CF Jake Stewart (3-6) hit two solo home runs and DH Zach Kirksey (2-4) homered and drove in five runs as the Connecticut Tigers (35-38) scored 11 runs on 12 hits en route to an 11-5 win over the Staten Island Yankees (28-45) on Monday night.
The Tigers scored four runs on four hits in the first inning against Yankees right-hander and former Connecticut Defender David Aardsma, on a rehab start in his attempt to come back from Tommy John Surgery. Stewart led off with a solo home run. 3B Tyler Hanover (2-5) reached on an error. LF Danry Vasquez (1-5) and RF Patrick Smith (1-4) both singled to load the bases.
Hanover scored on an error and Kirksey hit a two-run double to make it 4-0.
Connecticut scored a run on a wild pitch in the second inning to advance the lead to 5-0.
The Yankees pushed across four runs in the second inning to trim the Tigers lead to one run at 5-4.
Connecticut scored five runs in the sixth inning, with the big hit coming on a three-run home run over the center field wall by Kirksey to move the lead to a 10-4 advantage.
Stewart hit his second home run of the game by lifting a ball off the center field wall in the seventh inning for an 11-5 lead.
The Tigers and Yankees play game two of their series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Tim Kelley (1-3, 3.83) gets the start for Connecticut while RHP Gabriel Encinas (3-7, 5.27) takes the mound for Staten Island.
