Cross, Edman Guide Spikes to 2-1 Win over Crosscutters
July 28, 2016 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
State College Spikes News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, PA - Carson Cross delivered six stellar innings on the mound, and Tommy Edman's fifth-inning solo home run proved to be the difference as the State College Spikes bested the Williamsport Crosscutters, 2-1, on Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
With the win, the Spikes (26-13) created more separation from the Crosscutters (24-15) in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division race one game into the season's second half. State College and Williamsport still own the two best records in the NYPL.
Cross (3-3) allowed just one unearned run on two hits, two walks and a hit batsman during the night. The right-hander also struck out five batters during his outing, and retired the last seven batters he faced.
Edman made Cross's effort stand up for the victory with his third homer of the season, which broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth. The Stanford product's smash to left field off Williamsport starter Bailey Falter (1-4) also gave him 19 runs batted in from the leadoff spot this season, good for third-most on the team.
State College got on the board in the fourth when Vince Jackson reached on an error, stole second and scored on a Jeremy Martinez double. Martinez produced a pair of doubles and a walk on the evening.
Williamsport took the lead in the third when Luke Maglich walked, reached second on an error, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Mark Laird's single to center.
Cross then got the Spikes out of a second-and-third, no-out jam with no further damage.
The Crosscutters did not threaten again until the ninth, when Henri Lartigue tripled with one out. However, Brady Bowen (4) finished off his inning of work by striking out Luis Encarnacion and forcing pinch-hitter Brett Barbier to ground out to end the game.
Bowen's save was his fourth in five opportunities this season. Bob Wheatley also tossed two scoreless innings for the Spikes, giving up one hit and striking out two batters.
Falter took the loss after allowing two runs, one of them earned, on four hits over five innings. The defending NYPL Pitcher of the Week also struck out four batters.
The Spikes and Crosscutters will next head down to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Friday for the middle game of their three-game set. Right-hander Steven Farinaro (4-0) gets the ball for State College in the 7:05 p.m. matchup. Williamsport will counter with right-hander Adonis Medina (4-0), who has posted a 1.14 ERA over his first seven starts.
