Auburn Doubledays News Release

The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, won the first game of a three-game series on Thursday night, 3-2, against the West Virginia Black Bears. Doubledays shortstop Clayton Brandt knocked in two runs in the game en route to the win.

The Doubledays (17-22) scored first in the bottom of the fifth inning. Nick Banks led off the inning by reaching base on a fielding error by Black Bears shortstop Stephen Alemais. After a Tres Barrera strikeout, Jake Noll doubled to right field to put runners on second and third with one out. Ryan Ripken followed with a base hit to center field that scored Banks and moved Noll to third base, giving Auburn a 1-0 lead. Brandt then laid down a sacrifice bunt on a safety squeeze that scored Noll from third base to put the Doubledays up 2-0.

The Black Bears (19-20) tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Will Craig singled. Kevin Krause followed with a double to the left-field wall that scored Craig to cut Auburn's lead to one, 2-1. Albert Baur followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners. Sandy Santos then struck out for the second out of the inning. With Tyler Leffler batting, a wild pitch allowed Krause to score from third base and tie the game at two.

Auburn took back the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Noll grounded a ball to third base. Craig, the third baseman, fielded the ball but airmailed the throw to first. The errant throw allowed Noll to reach second base on the play. Noll then moved to third base on a Ripken groundout to first. With Noll on third base and the West Virginia infield playing in, Brandt singled over the infield to right field, scoring Noll and giving the Doubledays a 3-2 advantage.

The Doubledays and Black Bears meet on Friday night for the second game of a three-game series. Right-hander Weston Davis will pitch for Auburn against West Virginia right-hander Luis Escobar. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Falcon Park. Friday is "Grab Bag Night" at Falcon Park. The first 500 fans through the stadium gates will receive a raffle ticket to be redeemed for a mystery item at the Tompkins Trust Company Guest Services Desk. The Doubledays are also celebrating "YMCA Aquatics Night" on Friday. YMCA Aquatics participants will be recognized on the field before the game. Special ticket packages are available to players, families, and friends through an order form provided by the YMCA Aquatics Program.
