Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers (20-19) lost their eighth game in a row in front of 2280 at Dodd Stadium on Thursday night. The loss came at the hands of the Tri-City ValleyCats, affiliate of the Houston Astros, a 2-1 loss that moved the Tigers to 2-4 against Tri-City.
Locke St. John gave the Tigers a quality start, going six innings of work, giving up five hits, allowing two runs and striking out six. St. John's only blemish came in the second inning, Spencer Johnson lined a ball into the right centerfield alley to score Chuckie Robinson, who walked to lead off the inning. Johnson ended up at third with a triple and eventually scored on a sac-fly to right. That was all that St. John gave up as he buckled down and battled with runners on base throughout the night.
The Tigers grabbed their first, and only, run of the night in the fifth inning against Austin Nicely. Daniel Woodrow hit a fly ball to left field that Johnson could not haul in. Woodrow ended up at third and scored when Will Savage laid an RBI bunt single down the first base line, trimming the deficit to 2-1.
The Tigers threatened late in the game, specifically the eighth inning. Connecticut had runners at first and second with one gone. Austin Athmann grounded a ball up the middle that the second basemen Tyler Wolfe was positioned perfectly on. Wolfe grabbed the ball behind the second base bag, tagged the base and threw to first to end the frame.
Athmann did extend his hitting streak to four games with a single in the second inning. Josh Lester and Cole Bauml both earned multi-hit performances in the loss.
The Tigers attempt to end their losing streak tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. against the ValleyCats. Gregory Soto makes the start for Connecticut. It is First Responders Night at Dodd Stadium presented by Backus and Windham Hospitals.
